America on the Move is a free online pedometer walking program whose goal is to motivate people to walk an extra 2,000 steps per day and consume 100 fewer calories. The program can be used by individuals or groups. The extensive online community also provides resources and tools to assist people in achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  With over 500,000 users and 2,000 groups, it is easy to find a support system through this program.   

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation

The mission of this non-profit organization is to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity by 2015 through outreach to children in their homes, schools, doctor’s offices, and communities.  The alliance partners with leaders in the food, beverage, fitness, and healthcare industries as part of creating a healthy environment for children at school, at home, and in the community.  The alliance recently received a $23.2 million grant to continue to expand its Healthy Schools Program through 2014.

BAM! Body and Mind

This online information resource from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is focused on kids ages 9-13 and provides information regarding health, nutrition, stress, and physical activity.  The site is a resource that children can understand and guides kids to help make healthy choices through an interactive format.

Let’s Move!

Launched by First Lady Michelle Obama, the Let’s Move campaign focuses on ending childhood obesity through community outreach programs that encourage children to exercise and eat a healthy balanced diet.  The program reaches cities, towns, counties, schools, faith-based organizations, museums, child care facilities, clinics and more.

Steps to a Healthier Rockland County

This program, based in Rockland County, NY, provides the community with access to over a dozen nutrition presentations on topics ranging from food allergies to dining out.  A registered dietitian who also provides food demonstrations to the community to promote healthy eating runs the program.

Urban Sprouts

 Urban Sprouts is a San Francisco-based program that promotes healthy eating through school gardens.  The program helps schools start their own vegetable gardens and provides nutrition education.  Parents of students are also encouraged to participate through the Urban Sprouts Farmers in Residence program that encourages and supports families to garden at home.   When school is not in session, the Summer Sprouts program gives students the opportunity to participate in a gardening and leadership program.

West Virginia University Extension Service Family Nutrition Programs

The Family Nutrition Program (FNP) is a statewide outreach program that helps West Virginia families improve health and wellness through nutrition education and physical activity projects.  The FNP focuses on teaching the USDA Dietary Guidelines, encouraging physical activity, food budgeting, and food demos.  The WVU outreach program reaches 40 counties in WV every year.  Each week there is a Wild and Wonderful Wellness Challenge to promote health and wellness.
