Wheat Foods Council Announces 2008/2009 Executive Committee
Parker, Colo. (July 7, 2008) A new year marks exciting announcements for the Wheat Foods Council. General Mills sponsored the recent bi-annual board meeting, where the Council met to appoint new officers to the board of directors and discuss pressing issues of the industry. Hans Hayden, wheat producer and member of the Idaho Wheat Commission, was appointed as the 2008/2009 board chair. Additionally, the board recapped the 2008 programming, celebrating the impressive results which included more than 70 million total media impressions and a five percent increase in Web site visits.

Outgoing chair Kathy Wiemer, M.S., R.D., director of the Bell Institute of Health and Nutrition, a division of General Mills, will continue to serve as an officer for the Council along with Betsy Faga, North American Miller’s Association, vice chair and David Moore, Texas Wheat Producers Board, secretary-treasurer.

Hayden served the last two years as the Council's secretary-treasurer and vice chair. In addition to his involvement with the Council, he has owned a wheat operation in southern Idaho for many years in partnership with his brother. He has a Master’s degree in Agronomy from Brigham Young University and has been involved in a variety of local and state wheat activities for many years.

“Hans’ many years of first-hand experience in the wheat industry brings a wealth of information to the table for us,” said Marcia Scheideman M.S., R.D. and president of the Wheat Foods Council. “We have already capitalized on his expertise by having him actively involved in our Urban Wheat Field exhibit which will be on display later this year in New York City. From initial concepts to the finished field, Hans has had vital input every step of the way.”

The new officers assumed responsibility at the Council's board of directors meeting in June, which was sponsored by General Mills in Minneapolis, Minn.

Successes from this past year surrounded the May launch of Food for Thought from Parents to Children, an educational cookbook featuring recipes from Chef Gale Gand and parents throughout America. Partnering with Chef Gand allowed the Council to heighten visibility of both grain foods and the program.

The cookbook, created in honor of the 35th anniversary, presents parents with a tool in teaching their children on all aspects of the grain, “from farm to fork.” It promotes the versatility of grain foods by featuring all categories of grain foods by showing how they can be used in different meals and snacks throughout the day.

To date, the Council has sold over 1,000 copies of the cookbook, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Spoons Across America, a not-for-profit organization that works to positively influence the eating habits of children through hands-on education. Media highlights include placements in Newsweek, Washington Post and Chef Gale Gand’s appearance on Chicago’s WGN Superstation.

Looking forward, the Council is planning a unique “farm to fork” wheat field exhibit to educate consumers about all things wheat-- including the life cycle of the grain and nutritional benefits of wheat foods. The event will take place October 6th – 8th at the South Street Seaport in New York City.
