The Wheat Foods Council Launches Nationwide Program To Promote Bake And Take Day
PARKER, Colo. (February 28, 2006) – In collaboration with ACH Foods, the Wheat Foods Council will launch a month-long promotion to encourage nationwide participation in the 37th annual Bake and Take Day on March 25, 2006. During this time, participants in this event bake a product made from wheat and take it to a neighbor, friend or relative.
“The Wheat Foods Council is proud to be a part of Bake and Take Day,” said Marcia Scheideman M.S., R.D., President of the Wheat Foods Council. “We value this unique opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of wheat as an essential part of a healthy American diet.”
Started by Sumner County Wheathearts, an auxiliary organization of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Bake and Take Day began in 1970 in Sumner County, Kansas, as a community service event to celebrate the wheat harvest. On this day, members of the community would bake their favorite dish and share it with someone special. Even though the Kansas Wheathearts disbanded in December 2001, the Kansas Wheat Commission (KWC) and Kansas Association of Wheat Growers (KAWG) continue to sponsor the event.
This year, the Wheat Food Council joins forces with ACH Food Companies to extend the tradition to a broader audience supporting the national promotion of Bake and Take Day.
Highlighting the promotion is a guest appearance by Marcia Scheideman on “Flavors of America,” a national public TV series on CN8 Mid-Atlantic, with Chef Jim Coleman. On the program, Chef Coleman will teach young Girl Scouts to bake items to take to shut-ins. In addition to her appearance on “Flavors of America,” Scheideman will promote Bake and Take Day in an interview for Chef Jim’s Knight Ridder column and also on his NPR Show – “A Chef’s Table.”
Other program elements include a newspaper ad – incorporating program information, recipes, and coupons – a recipe booklet, and a Bake and Take Month section on the web site – www.250yearsBaking.com. The Wheat Foods Council will provide Bake and Take materials to State Commissions for distribution to local audiences. Additionally, State Commissions will be conducting local events surrounding the date. National youth organizations such as the Girls Scout of America, Boys and Girls Club, 4H and Campfire USA have also been contacted and will participate in various promotional activities throughout the month.
