Last Month's Question and Winner

Last month's Winner was Sandy Okstad from Ely, MN, who correctly answered the question:
January 3-9 is National Folic Acid week. Folic acid is a B-vitamin that, when taken before and during pregnancy, can help prevent birth defects. In 1998 the FDA mandated that all enriched grain foods be fortified with folic acid. To date, the mandation of folic acid has decreased Neural Tube defects by what percent in the U.S.?
A) 26%
B) 36%
C) 43%
D) 64%
The correct answer is A) 26%. Due to the requirement of folic acid added to enriched grain foods, such as, white bread, pasta, cereal, crackers and white flours, Neural tube defects have dropped by 26%. That is over 1,000 more babies per year that are born healthy. Additionally, the fortified grain foods with folic acid also may decrease colon cancer, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, cleft palate and heart disease.
