Moms Take Nearly 7 Million Steps Across America During the “Mom, the Everyday Athlete” Run/Walk
PARKER, Colo. (June 21, 2007) – On Saturday, May 19th, moms across the country united in support of the first ever “Mom, the Everyday Athlete” nationwide run/walk, conceived by the Wheat Foods Council with support from seeMOMMYrun – two non-profit organizations. Every step counted as thousands of moms from Los Angeles to New York celebrated their everyday athlete status and took nearly 7 million steps.

The Council’s ongoing “Mom, the Everyday Athlete” campaign educates moms about the importance of grains in a healthy diet and their role in fueling the body for physical activity and everyday life. The nutrition resources, created in conjunction with this event, provided moms with grain-based, pre-workout snack examples and provided tips and recipes for a pre-event pasta dinner party. A registration packet, sent to all participating moms, included a pedometer and Kellogg’s Special K Snack Bites.

“We captured the attention of moms throughout the country with an empowering event and reinforced the Wheat Foods Council’s position as a mom-friendly health resource,” said Marcia Scheideman M.S., R.D., president of the Wheat Foods Council. “The response to this program was overwhelming and enabled us to educate moms throughout the country about the importance of whole and enriched grains as fuel for their active lifestyles.”

Awareness for this campaign was built solely through media relations. Program successes include:
  • 73 online, print and broadcast placements resulting in 46.5 million impressions
-- Notable placements include American Baby, Parenting, Walking Fit, Denver Post, The Star-Ledger, Seattle Times, San Diego Union-Tribune, Chicago’s WGN-TV (CW) and Denver’s KMGH-TV (ABC).
  • More than 60,000 Web site visitors in March 2007 during the launch of the campaign
    -- Up 15,000 from March 2006 and February 2007
  • More than 6,000 moms registered for the event and, of those, 4,000 agreed to receive future WFC communications
  • Moms took nearly 7 million steps
  • Over 200 Moms agreed to serve on a WFC mom advisory board

The event’s overall mission was to empower moms to make their health a priority and elevate the importance of healthy eating and fitness throughout motherhood. Event participants connected with each other and scheduled their May 19th run/walk through www.seeMOMMYrun.com, used a pedometer to track their steps and entered their totals on www.wheatfoods.org.
