Baking Equipment Manufacturing Association and Wheat Foods Council Decipher 2005 Dietary Guidelines
The Baking Equipment Manufacturing Association (BEMA), in partnership with the Wheat Foods Council, announces the release of nutrition education materials with a practical approach to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines and MyPyramid. Created by the Wheat Foods Council for physicians, dietitians and the media, the materials offer straightforward advice on making healthy food choices, specifically highlighting the importance of grain foods in a good diet.

“Together with the Wheat Foods Council, we are providing tools that will enable health professionals to more easily communicate the new guidelines to the public,” said Kerwin Brown, President – BEMA. “The Government recognizes grains as essential to good health. We want to help get the word out and make it easy for people to incorporate grain foods into their meals and snacks on a daily basis.”

Health professionals will receive an updated chapter for the popular “It’s the Calories, not the Carbs” book as well as a PowerPoint presentation for use by nutrition professionals that contains valuable nutrition messages. Cover letters from WFC President Marcia Scheideman will be sent to health professionals, educators and physicians with supporting fact sheets all communicating the messages of the dietary guidelines.

The Government has enlisted the help of health professionals and influencers to interpret the new guidelines in such a way that makes comprehension and application seemingly effortless for the American public. “We are eager to partner with BEMA in sharing important, accurate and timely messages about grain foods,” said Marcia Scheideman MS, RD, President of Wheat Foods Council. “We feel that by reaching out to those who educate on dietary and health needs, we can positively impact public perception of grains and the Government guidelines as a whole.”

The Wheat Foods Council is an industry wide partnership formed in 1972 to increase grain food consumption through nutrition education, information research and promotional programs. The Council is supported voluntarily by wheat producers, millers, bakers, industry and related trade associations.

Founded in 1918, BEMA is a nonprofit trade association representing leading bakery and food suppliers, including equipment manufacturers, packaging and ingredients suppliers and service providers.
